Striving for Gender Equality in the Sciences

The Women in Graduate Science (UOWGS) organization at the University of Oregon strives for gender equality by focusing on the professional development of women and anyone identifying as a marginalized gender in all disciplines of science to enable them to become successful contributors to their fields. Your generosity will help provide social and financial support for all scientists from marginalized genders at UO.

The barriers to success for women in the sciences are still large, as was made clear by the National Science Foundation’s 2023 report on diversity and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). In the US, women make up 48% of the total workforce and 50% of the STEM bachelor’s degrees awarded. These numbers are in stark contrast to the 28% of the STEM workforce who identify as women. These gender gaps represent significant barriers to success and limited career opportunities for women in STEM that still exist today.

To address these issues, UOWGS offers financial support to STEM students through annual scholarships like our Parenting Award, which helps ease the financial burden of childcare for graduate students that can slow the progress of graduate training. Our Undergraduate Transition Award is awarded to one undergraduate advancing to graduate school, and our Graduate Travel Award helps graduate students travel to conferences to share their research and network with other scientists in their field.

Your support of the Women in Graduate Science organization doesn’t stop with scholarships. UOWGS members volunteer for and organize STEM events for K-12 students throughout the year. These events allow younger students the chance to experience hands-on science and meet role models and mentors. This year we were excited to be able to make our Girls Science Adventure Days tuition-free for all participants, helping to further break down barriers for girls in science. Beyond outreach, UOWGS also offers career development and networking workshops for UO STEM students, giving students the chance to hear from inspirational speakers and share their passion for science.

We want to thank you in advance for your contribution and helping us continue to achieve our mission!

Sincerely,

Willow Davis
