Support Black Student Leaders at UO

The Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center (BCC) intentionally brings people together to create opportunities for Black students and the greater UO Black community to find connection and support and to empower one another in a common space.

Five years ago, the BCC opened its doors to the UO Black community to engage students and others academically, socially, and culturally. Looking back on the past five years we have had the opportunity to serve our students, connect with alumni, and foster partnerships across the University campus. This home for Black students is a welcoming and supportive space, where we continue to nurture students along their academic journey.

One of the most effective tools we have for our students who engage in student leadership, academic prowess, and community service is the Black Cultural Center Scholarship Fund. This scholarship invests in the success of students who enhance the cultural and social development of the entire UO community.

Since 2021, we have awarded 27 scholarships totaling over $100,000. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on student leadership, service to the UO Black community, pursuit of a major or minor in Ethnic Studies or a minor in Black Studies, and/or financial need. Individual award range between $2,500 and $7,000 and are open to incoming first-year students to graduate/law students.

It's a modest amount, but with the support of donors, we have been able to increase the award every year in consideration of the cost of attending a university and the current economic climate

The LRP BCC Scholarship Fund aims to increase UO's retention of Black students by closing the gap when other UO scholarships do not fully meet students' financial needs.
