Support the Next Generation of Scientists
The University of Oregon Women in Graduate Science (UOWGS) organization is dedicated to advancing equity in science by supporting the professional growth of women graduate students and their allies across all scientific disciplines. By fostering community, mentorship, and access to resources, UOWGS helps women scientists thrive as they move into impactful careers and the allies that support them. Your contribution plays a vital role in sustaining this support and expanding opportunities for those who continue to face systemic barriers in STEM fields at UO.
Students participating in Girls' Science Adventure Days, a UOWGS program. While progress has been made in degree attainment within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, representation across the STEM workforce still does not reflect the diversity of those earning degrees. National data, including findings highlighted in the National Science Foundation’s 2023 report on diversity in STEM, underscore that significant and growing obstacles persist for women scientists. UOWGS works to address these challenges by supporting women graduate researchers at a critical stage in their careers and leaders and allies helping to close long-standing gaps in representation.
Donations directly fund UOWGS scholarships and awards that ease financial strain and promote academic success. These include the Parenting Award, which helps offset childcare costs for graduate student parents; the Undergraduate Transition Award, which supports students preparing to enter graduate programs; the Graduate Travel Award, enabling students to present research and build professional networks at conferences; and the Undergraduate Research Award, which provides funding for summer research experiences.
Beyond financial support, UOWGS is deeply committed to science outreach. Member-led programs introduce K-12 students to hands-on scientific exploration, connect them with role models, and help build confidence and curiosity. With donor support, UOWGS has been able to offer Girls’ Science Adventure Days (GSA) at no cost for the past two years for students in grades 4-6, removing financial barriers for students eager to engage with STEM. For graduate members, UOWGS also hosts seminars featuring diverse career paths in science, professional development and networking workshops, and quarterly social events that strengthen community and peer support.
We want to thank you in advance for your contribution and helping us continue to achieve our mission!
Sincerely,
Katya Podkovyroff
