Welcome to UO Hip Hop Ensemble! We are a brand new ensemble in the School of Music and Dance, formed with the intention of performing and composing hip hop music, improving our musicianship, promoting cultural awareness, and representing UO and the larger hip hop community in a positive light. We are comprised of instrumentalists, MCs, and singers.
Response to the group has been electric, with many students dropping in just to witness the rehearsals. There is a real thirst among UO students for opportunities to learn and perform contemporary music, and Hip Hop Ensemble is one way to satisfy that desire. However, like all ensembles we have equipment needs, and those needs are only barely being met with our current available resources.
We have no budget of our own to purchase the gear we need. We are currently scraping by with minimal, older gear borrowed from various departments within the School of Music, including amplifiers, a p.a., microphones, and a drum kit. I hope that with your support we can endow the Hip Hop Ensemble with the needed equipment. This will enable the ensemble to perform at school events like the UO’s annual Hip Hop Jam and the EMU performance series, and to rehearse without participants having to cart in their own amplifiers.
In addition to buying our own gear, we hope to be able to hire guest artists to act as instructors and collaborators. This sort of instruction would allow our students to gain an inside perspective from people working within the hip hop industry, and facilitate them making professional connections outside the school.
We hope that you will consider giving the UO’s new Hip Hip Ensemble some love! Thank you!
