Student Research: Community Gardens and Global Food Sovereignty

February 24, 2023

"The undergraduate research funds that I’ve received have been incredibly helpful in facilitating the completion of my undergraduate thesis, which I am writing on the community garden where I work, Huerto de la Familia. I am investigating the ways in which this community garden is connected to the global food sovereignty movement. As part of my research, I am conducting interviews, and this funding is helping me transcribe my interviews so that I can analyze them in their written form. Defending an undergraduate thesis will prepare me for graduate school in environmental justice, as well as developing my skills working with a community partner in an ethical way. Since I want to work in the community and nonprofit sector on climate justice issues, knowing how to interact with and adapt to organizations and their schedules is an essential skill that I am gaining from my research."

We're nearly there!

February 20, 2023

Thanks to your generosity, we're nearly at our $20,000 goal!

We have until March 3 to get to the finish line, and we could use your help spreading the word. Please take a moment to share on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, and share the link with loved ones. Every gift gets us closer to our $10,000 match.

Students like JoJo Kim benefit from undergraduate research funds every year. Here's what JoJo said about her experience:

"I have been awarded undergraduate research funds to attend the Oxford Consortium for Human Rights (OCHR) Research Seminars this March in Oxford, England. The travel expense to England was a great barrier to confirming my acceptance of the program. As an international student, the support and care I received from UO have helped me continue my study in the US and pursue higher academic achievements.

The experiences and connections I will be able to make through OCHR will be invaluable. I’ll interact with students, renowned scholars, and civil activists from around the world and learn from their unique experiences. I’ll be able to develop a broader perspective and deeper understanding of the history of nonviolent civil resistance and activism. This Oxford Workshop would be an incredible experiential learning experience for me as I continue to ponder my role in the world and ways to make a difference in my community."

The Impact of Your Donation

February 15, 2023

“After presenting virtually last year, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Anaheim, CA this past week to present in person at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists. I am honored to have won the poster presentation award in the Microbiology Division! It was an amazing experience to hear inspiring keynote speakers, meet scientists young and old from all over the country, and do that final step of the scientific method, “sharing your research.” Excited for more conferences to come!”

"As a first-generation low-income Latinx student, participating in the higher education initiative DucksRISE (Research, Internship, and Student Engagement) had a transformative impact on my life. This program gave me a sense of purpose which I did not have until I began this program the spring of my junior year. As a result, since joining DucksRISE, I am currently an intern for UO’s Prison Education Program as well as a legislative scholar. I was also most recently selected as a fellow for the Oxford Consortium on Human Rights and am a founding member of an on-campus Human Rights club.

My participation in DucksRISE was instrumental in shaping the person I am today. I am motivated and optimistically looking towards the future, but most importantly, am confident the continued support of DucksRISE will provide the necessary tools to give rise to better outcomes among first-generation, low-income, and students of color like me."
