Make the work of Brian Lanker accessible to all

Brian Lanker was a prominent photographer, photojournalist, and documentary filmmaker. He won the Pulitzer Prize at age 25 for his groundbreaking photo series on women and natural childbirth. He has also won acclaim for his portraits of, among others, Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Lena Horne, and Steve Prefontaine.

The University of Oregon Library’s Special Collections is thrilled to have acquired the complete archive of Lanker’s life’s work from Lynda Lanker and her family.

We aim to make these important historical documents available to scholars around the world, promoting the study of Lanker’s groundbreaking body of work and inspiring new creations. To this end, we are raising funds to create a permanent endowment that will provide annual funding for a new Brian Lanker Research Award. This fund will establish research awards for scholars who wish to study Lanker’s work.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, we are close to our goal, with only $14,000 left to get us to the finish line.

This massive collection includes:

  • Unedited negatives and slides
  • Analog and digital photos
  • Interviews with 75 subjects from I Dream a World
  • Film reels of the PBS film They Drew Fire
  • Correspondence between Brian and his subjects
  • Items from Sports Illustrated, Life, and National Geographic
  • Archives from his tenure at The Register-Guard
  • Materials from athletic events such as UO track and field, the Olympics, and the Super Bowl
  • Items from photo shoots of famous figures such as Muhammad Ali, David Bowie, and Tina Turner

With your help, we can meet our goal to ensure Brian Lanker’s work remains accessible for generations to come.
