“Lighting shapes the way an audience sees, feels, and experiences productions.”
– Jordan Hamlin, Theater Arts ’25
This March, we’re spotlighting the behind-the-scenes artists who make theater productions at the UO shine. The Theater Arts department is raising $82,500 to replace outdated lighting equipment with new industry-standard lights. Can you help light the way?
As you may already know, state-of-the-art equipment is vital to providing our students with the tools and experience to succeed in their careers. Automated LED lighting fixtures enable the computer control of color, movement, intensity, shape, and form and are now the major light source in musicals, concerts, live entertainment, and corporate events. It is critical that future lighting designers and production electricians have solid training in designing with and programming automated fixtures. Other students, such as costume and scene designers, can experience how their artistry looks under the most contemporary lighting sources.
Beyond the benefit to students, automated fixtures will bring a new visual impact to University Theatre productions. The movement, color, and beam changes bring a different energy to how an audience experiences a production. Slight shifts in color can modify the look of an entire scene.
The Theater Arts department is seeking to purchase fifteen ETC Lonestar LED fixtures. These light fixtures not only use the latest LED technology but are small and silent enough to be used in both the Hope and Robinson theatres.
Just as with any theater production, everyone must come together for a common goal – to create art that illuminates the human experience. You can be a part of our production this March when you contribute to the Theater Arts DuckFunder campaign.
Be a beacon to the community! When you purchase a full fixture for the department, you're inspiring others to give. The Theatre Arts program will name the light in your honor.
